He was the eldest son of Ma Teng and a descendant of Ma Yuan. Ma Chao retreated to Liang Province subumit to Fu Jian of Liang Province but Fu Jian was defeat by Cao Cao Forces and killed the provincial inspector Wei Kang for plotting against him and fled.ДЄfter being repeated defeat by Cao Cao. After this defeat Cao Cao charge Ma Chao's family for treason and had them executed.

The coalition broke up after losing the Battle of Tong Pass against Cao Cao's forces. In 211, his father formed a coalition with Han Sui and other northwestern warlords and launch a campaign against the warlord Cao Cao His father was capture and executed. A descendant of the general Ma Yuan, Ma Chao was the eldest son of Ma Teng, a prominent warlord in Liang Province (covering parts of northwestern China). In Dynasty Warriors 6 Special, he uses a large sword similar to Guan Ping's in the fifth version.Ma Chao (176вЂ“232), courtesy name Mengqi, was a military general and warlord who lived in the late Eastern Han dynasty and early Three Kingdoms period of China. However, he still remains one of the few characters capable of increasing the abilities of any horse he/she rides. His attacks are as strong as Guan Yu and Zhang Fei, while his attack speed is comparable to Zhao Yun and his ratio of mounted strength to total attack power is the highest of any character's. Ma is formidable in battle as a hybrid character with both attack and speed power. He later joins Zhang Lu and eventually enters Liu Bei's service at the Battle of Jiameng Pass, becoming one of the Five Tiger Generals of Shu. Han has had a friendly history with Cao and he defects to join Cao during the battle, leading to Ma's defeat. With him are his cousin Ma Dai, a powerful warrior named Pang De, and his father's sworn brother, Han Sui. The first level of his Musou mode is the Battle of Tong Pass, where he leads his men to attack Cao, to avenge his father Ma Teng and brothers Ma Tie and Ma Xiu, who were killed by Cao's men. He is more independent than other characters as he only serves Shu because both Liu Bei and he have a shared foe in Cao Cao.

In Dynasty Warriors, Ma Chao tends to be portrayed as a mighty warrior who fights for justice.
